Hi all...
Has anyone hear heard of TSM with any effectiveness when it comes to helping with eating disorders? My sister is in a bad way with her ED and I feel like her problem with food and mine with alcohol are very similar. I've been finding very encouraging results so far with NAL and wonder if eating disorders might be applicable with TSM?

Maybe a longshot... but her ED is so similar to my drinking problem... I just thought maybe someone on these forums might have heard or read something...
Please let me know if so....
Thanks, and love,
Travis

Hi Travis,

I have no personal experience with this but I do know that Nal is being researched for behavioural problems such as eating disorders and gambling etc... as well as lower doses (LDN) for multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia. If you google "Naltrexone eating disorders" there is a lot of information, (probably a lot of disinformation too), try Google Scholar if you can wade through the jargon.

Hi

I have had bulimia in the past, then alcohol took over. I'd currently consider myself to be having a mild bulimic episode and since TSM helped me so much with my alcohol intake, I am trying to formulate some sort of plan for the eating. At the moment I always take 50 mg nal and wait 1 hour before I have a binge, remainder of the time I eat non-binging type foods (so all chocolate, any deep fried food, cakes etc are only eaten whilst Nal is in my system). I do not know if this is going to do anything but it's not hurting me.

Hope you and your sister can work something out for this.

Just a thought - I wouldn't say I have an eating "disorder" but I definitely have a history of overeating. It's something I've gotten more control over in recent years as I've grown older (AND as my drinking has gotten more OUT of control). However, since I've been in control of the drinking with TSM, I've definitely been back to my old eating habits to some degree (junk food more often, more fast food, late night snacking). Of course, I'd rather have the eating problem (and a few extra pounds) than have to deal with the drinking problem I had. I mentioned this to my psychiatrist, and he said that if Naltrexone worked for overeating, everyone would be on it.

My psychiatrist also said he's seen Naltrexone work for things like porn addiction & internet addiction.

The National

Naltrexone works for alcohol in a lot of people and most aren't "on it", never mind overeating. I experienced something similar re drinking and eating, ie as drinking increased, bulimic tendencies decreased and when I reversed the drinking the eating binges increased and I now believe I just used the ED/drinking because I didn't know how to deal with life effectively.

I currently take 50mg Nal if I think I'm going to eat any junk food whether in moderation or otherwise, that combined with facing the fact I eat in response to various emotions has helped a great deal. I have had to make a big effort and 95% of the time I can now resist over eating if I know it's in response to emotion and am recognising the triggers, even if it's as small as loneliness or having too much spare time. It's been difficult at times but I think I'm getting there, and it's definitely getting easier.

I believe that drinking and eating have been my escape and now's the time to stop hiding and try deal with life. Not easy but I want to get on top of this for once and for all. If Nal helps great, if not it's not done me too much harm.
