Yeah, a lot of us North Americans say "units" when we mean drinks until we realize that units are different.

You sound just like me, too. Every year drinking a little more, and getting older, and you know your story will not have a happy ending.

The good news is, NAL saved me, and you sound like an ideal candidate. I wouldn't worry about the running thing at all. If NAL works, your entire life will be changed and you'll laugh about your single-minded focus on running. Take your NAL and get cured. Then you'll have the rest of your life to go running!

I'm an athlete and have had no problems carrying on exercising whilst using NAL/TSM. In fact the reduction in alcohol intake allowed me to improve my performance. 3 years down the line I'm now long-term AF(zero alcohol intake).

If alcohol is affecting your life I think it's well worth the risk of going off exercise for a bit.

I didn't cycle my nal I took it and drank as I wanted to, just as the method prescribes. After a while improvement in training became an incentive to have more AF days.

Hi tonirossa, I saw your post regarding the side effects and wanted to chime in. I am an avid exerciser and have found that I can continue with the Nal. However, I have experienced some serious side effects as well. I found that taking a small amount (12.5) in the late morning and then the other 12.5 to 25 mgs an hour or so before drinking helps to ward of the side effects. My problem is sticking with the golden rule and taking the full 50 mgs. The 25mgs was working before I took a Vacation from Nal.

I just started training for a half marathon in November and have decided that getting the alcoholism under control is more important. Therefore, , I will stop the training before giving up on the Nal this time. Hope this helps, Keek

I went for an hour-long mountain bike ride today about 4 hours after the NAL (I usually take it in the morning). Not sure whether the endorphins were flowing or not, but when I got back I was mostly just proud of myself for getting out of the damn house and doing something, and that made me happy. I noticed I had a lot of extra energy and a crystal-clear head afterward, which is kind of unusual. Then I had my usual post-workout beer and didn't feel it at all; also weird.

I've always been an avid athlete (windsurfing, yoga, hiking, etc.) but due to depression this has been my "lost summer," mostly holed up in the house and, of course, imbibing. I really don't buy what Eskapa says about NAL extinguishing exercise, though. I'm encouraged enough by today's effort that I hope to keep it up and get back into my old rhythm.

It's likely that runner's high is not entirely mediated by the opioid system: Exercise also increases the levels of endocannabinoids, the brain's natural cannabis-like molecules, in the bloodstream.
