Only been on this for 3 days , so this is a bit premature, but, once you think you are under control, do you continue NAL forever?

Yes, the idea is that you will always take it before you drink...forever. The idea being that even though extinction has occured and you are in control, without the Nal your brain will relearn the reward association to alcohol and you could go back to where you started. There are some people on here who have reduced their dose once they are at cure point... and a few who have stopped taking it against the advice in the book...but there also those who stopped and found that they had a backslide.

Thank you, I did think I'd read that somewhere, but I've been glued to this site and on FB that I'm getting muddled!

No problem! Have you read Dr. Eskapa's book? It's not a necessity, but I found it useful.
Good luck.

Yes I have, Claudia gave it to me.

But it's a reference book as well and it takes a while to find things.

thank you.

I just want to echo what Ruthie says, that yes, for this program to work, you must be committed to taking the NAL forever. I can vouch that not even waiting a full hour one time can compromise your progress as I have only done that one time and it was this past week. I will definitely not be doing that again as the difference was dramatic. Luckily I immediately went back to a strict protocol and my numbers have been down these past few days, lower than in quite a while. Given the stress of the holidays and other issues, that's saying quite a lot for the power of Nal, at least for this alcoholic.

Good luck with the program! It works beautifully for so many; it just works in different ways so be patient and willing to stick with it for the long haul.

Sheryl

I hadn't heard of reducing the dosage for post-cure maintenance. It does make sense, I guess -- once the addiction is gone, we could take a stab at "normal" enjoyment of alcohol by blocking only part of the reward.

Even a half dose blocks me completely, though, so that may not be an option. Unless I went to a quarter dose. Or something. Anyway, the theory is interesting.

I don't think I'd recommend ditching nal entirely unless maybe the overdrinking was a short and recent part of a long, normal-drinking life. Even then the idea seems a little dicey. It's always easier to relearn a once-learned behavior.

Hi Summerglow and welcome , as everyone has said , Nal once it works has to be taken forever , however if it works for me that would mean maybe taking it once or twice a week an hour before a few drinks so that would be 1 to 2 tablets a week for the rest of my life , not much is it :) All the best J.
