Beginners to the Sinclair Method often have trouble figuring out how much alcohol they are drinking. This online site does it for you, with a calculator and a wealth of other useful info:

What units does the Sinclair Method use? UK, USA?

Looking over the book i assume its US.

I sure would love to see us all use the same STANDARD units or drink measurements (US,UK,whatever) so we can all know what amounts each of us are progressing from. I also would love to see in people's signature when they started or even if they re-started so us newbies know what's going on with our fellow TSM'r's and how long they have been doing the Method. Since I am new maybe someone can suggest a STANDARD site we can all go to to measure our drinks, units or however everyone wants to calculate. Also maybe someone could show an example of a STANDARD Signature of how we can list our Pre TSM, Start Date, Weeks, Units etc. I am confused by some people's signatures, sorry as I said I am new and not sure of the protocol but would love a STANDARD on this site for Newbies to follow. I know so may of you have been on here for many months or years and would love to hear how it should be done.
Thanks everyone and so happy to have found TSM and have you all for support.

I personally use US standard drink measurements. It's just what I am use to. The whole "unit" thing doesn't make sense to me and it seems like a six pack suddenly measures far more than six units. I use the following basic calculator that takes ABV%, size in ounces, and standard drink sizes and comes up with a number. For example, a 16 oz, 5% beer yields 1.3 drinks.

Rethinking Drinking

Cheers!

Hi all,
I've been trying and trying to calculate the units and everything and it all seems strange and I really can't get it done! :cry: I feel really silly but can someone help me? Either calculate to units or if a can of beer is considered one drink? Whichever standard, there's so many. I live in Sweden and my significant other just started on Nal two days ago. Pre TSM he was drinking an average of 8 cans (50cl) of strong beer (7,5%) per day everyday.

Someone please help me calculate this out?

Thank you so much!!! :oops:

Hi lionessroj and welcome.

I think the first important thing is establishing an accurate measure of what you are drinking, and stick to whatever that is. The problem with the US calculator which is linked in a post on this thread is that is uses fluid oz measures which mean nothing to europeans who use millilitres(mls) and centilitres(cl) for measuring fluids.

Here in the UK we would work out units as follows;

strength (%) x volume (mls) / 1000

So your 500ml (1 cl = 10mls) can has 7.5% x 500 / 1000 = 3.75 UK units.

I have discovered that 1 UK unit = 0.564 USA units. Pre TSM I would drink 30 UK units in one session (a full day or one evening), which in US would be just about 17 units. So you could take your units from my equation above and multiply x 0.564 and your can now has 2.12 US units.

At school I liked maths!
