Hey
I live in the UK and have been on antabuse, campral in the past and barely reach 100 days sober, when i get there I get wrecked and then i'm back and worse on the drink. I had a detox in 2001 and lived in dry house for 8 months. I cannot get on track at all, I think i'm doing ok, then I binge heavily on vodka and cannot stop till i blackout.

I have been reading about Naltrexone and TSM and have talking about this with my alcohol worker. I am seeing a Dr at the alcohol place today at 3pm, to talk about it. My alcohol worker had heard on TSM but didnt really know much about it.

I want to try it, have read about it and in my head i feel that it is something that could help. Just wish there was a book where I can log everything that is if I can start it. Would appreciate support and help getting sorted.

Thanks
Sarah

Hi Geeky/Sarah,

Welcome to the forum, and best of luck getting access to Naltrexone through your doctor. Please let us know how your appointment goes.

Concerning a log book, many people here keep track of what they are drinking using a journal or electronic spreadsheet. Some members, like myself, track everything that they drink right here in the forum on the Weekly Progress board.

You'll find plenty of supportive people here, and a few members have tried alternatives to Naltrexone such as Antabuse and Campral, so they may be able to offer some of their experiences and perhaps the differences between treatments.

TSM can be a bit of a rollercoaster, but I hope you hang in there and keep posting.

-H

Hi Hester

Thanks for your reply.

The appointment went ok, the doctor listened to me, we discussed my drinking in the past and also currently. She said I had to go and get a Liver Function Test done, which I have done and I get the results on Thursday. If this test is ok, I can start Naltrexone. One problem, they want me to take it everyday and try and not drink rather than using TSM. I talked about it and she said because its all based in USA, she cant really say I am ok to try it.

Was dissapointed but I hope Naltrexone does help.

Sarah

Many people who've been on this board do TSM by having an understanding with their MD that the RX is for daily craving-reduction with the goal of daily abstinence.

Instead, they follow the TSM protocol of taking NAl only when they drink (and continue to drink as usual, at least in the early going) but do not take nal on the off days.

It's not the most open way to operate but some folks have no other option.

Stay in touch with how it goes for you.
