But this is ridiculous. I'm still in the early stages of the Sinclair Method. I've taken naltrexone four times (25 mg the first two times, then 50 mg). Each time I've had EXTREME nausea. Is it supposed to be like this? Each time I can only manage a few drinks and then feel like vomiting. Then the next day and day after I have a hangover that feels like a bad acid trip. The first hour after taking the naltrexone (before the alcohol) also feels vaguely trippy in a very unpleasant way. I had no idea it was going to be like this. Does it get any better or am I just not a candidate for this drug?

It gets better. The first time I took nal I couldn't even drink I felt so sick. It took about three or four dosages of 25 mg for me before I didn't get nauseous. Same with the other "acid" effects. People frequently report feeling "spacey" and "trippy" when they first start out. BUT I haven't seen one person not report that these side effects QUICKLY subside after one week, two weeks, max. I was initially a bit irritated by The Cure For Alcoholism because it has a one-sentence throw away line about a handful of people feeling nauseated on nal with no other side effects. Well there are others, like feeling spacey for several of us, plus nightmares and sweats. But the clinical trials and the people's experiences here all have shown that whatever you are experiencing, it should go away soon. I also had MAJOR sleep disturbances where I'd wake up fighting for my life. That went away too after a week or so on the nal. This drug is messing with your brain so you know it takes your body some time to get acclimated. Most of us think the HUGE UPSIDE of drastically reducing our cravings and consumption make it well worth it. Stick with it, the side effects should subside. You may want to stick with 25 mg for a while until your body adapts. 25 mg is still effective so long as you drink within a few hours immediately afterwards -- whereas 50 mg blocks receptors for 12 hours. Try to get to 50 MG though -- all of the studies are based upon a 50 mg dosage. But Dr. Eskapa has told some of us, who were more sensitive to side effects, that 25 mg is acceptable initially, as outlined above.

Good luck.

Nick

I too had trouble with nausea when I first started. The trick is to start with lower doses, and slowly work you way up.
You can read about my experiences with this here: Cessation's journey

I too am having horrible nightmares and wake up still quite frightened. Strangely enough even though it is very humid here the drenching sweats have subsided a bit the last two days and nothing has really changed to warrent it!
