It's even dumber than that, actually. You will drink -- and die! you are certain to die! -- unless a divine power works a miracle on your behalf. You don't quit drinking; your "higher power" removes the desire to drink along with your other defects of character.
ETA: Although, come to think of it, "divine will" and "superhuman willpower" could be the same thing.
