I had a look at the advice on Ezine to help people stop binge drinking.

Here's a summary:

Leading 2 Stop Binge Drinking Tips
1) Remove alcohol consumption out of your home
2) Cut ties with buddies who like binge drinking as well as avoiding gatherings that promote excessive drinking.

What are they smoking? I was so furious at these 'shysters' peddling their own wares, that I wrote my own Ezine article:

Like many in this group, my goal is to promote the Sinclair Method. I'm happy to be named and have started putting some thoughts together on a blog: http://www.theonymousalcoholic.com/binge-drinking I'm not brave enough to mention my surname... but all other info is there!

Andy.

Awesome blog! I posted!

Two minor critiques. I think it turns people off when you say, "You have to take Naltrexone for life." Most people don't want to take a drug for life and the title is a bit misleading. You don't take Naltrexone for life if you don't drink -- only one hour before drinking. And since many people on the method end up abstinent, they don't, in fact, take the pill for life. It's more accurate to say, "You take Naltrexone one hour before you drink, every time you drink; you don't take it when you don't drink." It's a minor detail but I think you run the risk of alienating newcomers, many of whom want no part of taking a medication for life and who might incorrectly dismiss the method if they don't read the passage carefully.

My other critique involves upregulation. Anti-TSMers will use upregulation as a red herring argument against the method. And from my experience upregulation is more than offset by extinction. Yes, there may be more opioid receptors as a result of drinking on Naltrexone, but the learned behavior has also been unlearned to a certain degree as a person progresses on TSM. And for me, I have drank without Naltrexone several times -- including multiple weeks at the Holidays. My experience was not some incredible euphoric high, but quite the opposite. I felt a diminished high because of extinction. The first week or so I drank off of the drug, I didn't get the old "warm glow" -- it took weeks to come back. So for me, personally, the notion that I would drink once off the drug and go on some wild binge is complete and utter non-sense. It took weeks for me to regain the old buzz. And then when I realized I was drinking at unhealthy levels, my control was almost immediate, as soon as I took Naltrexone. In addition, I have noticed several other people on the board who have drank off of Naltrexone -- the majority who forgot to take the drug. And you will not read a SINGLE STORY on our board of how drinking was in any way better due to upregulation. From where I sit it's more theory than anything else, for the above-cited reasons. It's also a bogus argument that can be manipulated against the use of TSM.
