I began using Naltrexone in Dec of 2010. I had been drinking upwards of 80 units a week for over ten years. I experienced the honeymoon effect, wherein my consumption decreased dramatically, then rose back upwards, then slowly declined over the next year. However, getting real days without any alcohol was still a struggle.

After approx three years, I declared myself in control and cured. My consumption was down to around 20-25 units a week, and I had little difficulty taking two or so days off.

About two years ago, I got complacent and started drinking without Nal. Suddenly, I was back up to high consumption and had a few dangerous experiences, including blackouts.

I quickly realized my error and got back on the Nal.

Now, I can take alcohol or leave it. Haven't had a drink in four days, won't drink until the weekend, and most likely will only have one or two. My consumption is down to three or four units a week.

I can without reservations say that Naltrexone has given me back control over alcohol. I can also say that it took much longer than Dr Eskapa offers in his book. Whether that has something to do with the length of my abuse of alcohol I cannot say, but I imagine that was the issue.

Stick with it. The science is solid. It may take longer than you wish, but there seems to be no downside.

Great Tongo! TSM definitely takes longer to work on some people. I've been on TSM for 4 years now, and while I felt better after a year and started gaining control, it is only in the past few months I've been able to have 3-4 AF days a week. But compared to where I was day one (drinking every day and 60+ drinks a wk) - TSM has definitely worked! As I mentioned in another post today, I still want to get down further (I'm at 18-20+ drinks a week), but am going in the right direction.

Wow NJGUY your post is eye opening about how long it can take. But what a difference between 60+ drinks a week and 18-20. Good for you!!!
