Just wanted to throw this subject out to you all. What are some of your triggers that cause you to want to drink and what do you do about them?

The biggest physical triggers are: Hunger, Thirst and physical Tiredness.

After that I think they vary for many people, for some, the theme music of their favourite TV show is a trigger, for others it could be the smell of a barbecue or the sound of a football match.

Some are easier than others, the physical triggers are easily satisfied by eating, drinking and resting.

Emotions are usually big triggers too but they are complicated because when we are in the throws of abusive drinking we often don't even recognise our emotions, we just know that we want a drink, now! However this craving can be turned to our advantage in the sense that we can learn to recognise cravings as messages that something is wrong.

We can have a sort of conversation with ourselves: You want a drink? OK, why? Are you hungry? thirsty? tired? stressed? angry? frustrated? sad? etc...

The What to do about it can only come after we recognise our triggers.

I hope this helps

Curi
