Hi I had to have short notice dental treatment last week which required an injection to numb the area. i panicked as i had had nal+al the night before and didn't really want to have to reveal to my dentist. I thought i would wait and see if my mouth became numb before saying anything. Well it did. I'm confused -i thought we were warned that pain meds wouldn't work on nal. Then i began to wonder was the nal fake stuff as it is a new order and i feel like i have gone backwards in terms of drinking levels.
Can anyone clarify this please.
Tnx

Local anesthetics usually are not opiates. They directly block the nerves, rather act on the central nervous system. Hence the injection at the site. These usually have "-caine" in the name: benzocaine, lidocaine, Novocaine, etc.

It's not uncommon to have a type of mild allergic reaction to opiate drugs, so if anyone wants to discuss it in advance without spilling the beans, one way to do it would be to mention getting nauseous/itchy/rashy from a codeine or other opiate pain pill in the past and ask what will be used. Because doctors and dentists know a mild allergy on one occasion can portend a serious reaction another time, the doctor/dentist will surely pay attention.

Lena is correct. I just had a broken tooth fixed with novacaine and learned that (a) it worked and (b) it's not an opiod-based treatment so naltrexone has no impact on it.

Indeed, good to know - I need to see the dentist soon and was considering delaying my start on Nal until after that (order arrives next week). Good to know that's not something I'll need to worry about.

This board is a wealth if information.

I had a crown put in last December and my Naltrexone from the previous night had no effect on the local anesthetic at all. As lena and Nick have stated above, Naltrexone blocks opiate receptors in the brain, whereas local anesthetics block the pain receptors in the region of the injection.

No worries.
