Have never written on the forum before - just visited and read others posts. I have been drinking daily for more than 10 years and my intake just continues to rise. I researched the Sinclair Method thoroughly and had to convince a local doctor to prescribe naltrexone for me. The first thing I noticed was my desire for coffee in the mornings (also a very old habit) is gone and it does not taste good to me. I am a wine-only drinker - nothing else appeals - but I enjoyed all kinds of wine. The reds were the first to lose their appeal and gradually the white wines have gone the same way. Yet - I still persist even though I don't enjoy what I'm drinking. The urge, the compulsion to have that first drink is so strong and then to continue up until bedtime. That's what I'm starting to fear is beyond the reach of the naltrexone. Can anyone who is further down the path than me share any experience that might be helpful?

hey noluck,
have you tried upping your dose to 100 mgs? i am just starting to use 100 mgs. it seems like there were a couple people who had better results with a higher dosage. sure wish i could remember who and give you a link to a thread. i think joe sixpack is having improved numbers now that he is on 100, and yogagirl reported that she thought 100 mgs helped. there have also been a few who the higher dose did not help, but i think it is worth a try. like you i am not having results (i am now at week 19) and keep hearing the suggestion to go for the af day, but just can't seem to get myself there yet. it may be the key, and there's one way to test that hypothesis, hopefully we will both be able to do so soon. i know how discouraging it can be, but i hope you don't give up, the alternatives are not very appealing.
wishing you all the best. :)

Noluck you sound like you're in about exactly the same place as me, though I've been at it a bit longer than you.

I've been trying to take the advice of DOMD by trying harder but do find it very difficult to break through the habits.

For example, decided I'd try for an AF night last night (was feeling like I'm coming down with a cold anyway). So when I went to the store I didn't buy wine. After dinner my husband was like - you went to the store today and didn't buy wine? (he drinks plenty too, but is also okay with mixed drinks). As soon as he suggested it my desire is right there and I say - well I can make a run if you really want me to. So of course I did. The good news was that I didn't finsh my whole bottle of wine for a change.

I've been trying to really get in tune with what my brain/body is telling me vs. what my habit is telling me, but it's hard. I might try the suggestion to go to 100mg as path has suggested (and yes Joe12pack and Yogagirl both went to 100mg).

I also started researching the My Way Out site and that method. I have my stuff on order now. There are several former TSM'ers over there that are winos like us and the MWO method is showing some success for them.

I've found a nice support group there as well and one way or another I'm going to keep at this and hope for success. Hope you will too!

FYI Illuminae I ordered many of the herbal supplements from the My Way Out Site (Kudzu, etc). Started taking them just before I began on NAL, maybe contributing to my (albeit very early) success thus far. The MWO site is a great conjunction to TSM in my humble opinion, as is SMART recovery even though they are both abstinence based. I think using cognitive behavioral strategies in conjunction with TSM can only strengthen anyone's individual response to positive interventions!
