I started with naltrexone last year when i could get it on prescription in Sweden. Since returning to the UK I wasn't able to get a prescription so my drinking returned to as it was pre Sinclair method, if not a bit worse although some of that I put down to a stressful year, moving countries new jobs. In December I started to really feel the depressive effects of over drinking and decided to give it another go, ordering my pills from a reliable source on the internet.

Its been just under two months now and I have been more disciplined in my approach this time. I started on 50mg and I have had some side effects such as nausea but i haven't, in general, made it past 2 alcoholic drinks - generally 2 average strength beers. The taste of wine or spirits on nal is just off putting in itself. I would say I have had something like 15 drinking occasions in 2 months - 12 of those have followed this pattern. Two of the others were christmas day when I got through about the equivalent of a bottle of wine and new years eve which was about the same. The other occasion was a bit anomalous and had about 5 pints of beer.

At the moment I think that I am in a comfortable place drinking 2 beers every four days on average. This week I didn't drink for 5 days running which is something I haven' done for a few years. The nal is still making me a bit nauseous and the night before last I gambled with a reduction of 25mg. One small whiskey later and I was done. Less nausea and less groggy the next morning, so I am going to continue with a lower dose and see what happens.

The most significant progress is that the internal argument I have over drinking and not drinking is most definitely swaying towards not drinking. The drinking is just not working for me and I am starting to get that in my sub-conscious. I tend to drink as a reaction to stress and that trigger seems to be dissipating. Also with a greatly reduced consumption I am starting to feel a lot less stressed.

I have been a little irritable at times but not so bad and i think it is normal when reducing from 30 - 40 UK units a week down to under 10 units a week.

So far so good, it has to be done properly but it can and does work.

sounds like you're doing really well cozmo :)

sorry to hear you're still getting SE's. I think, so long as you're not going to drink for an extended period, that 25mg should be okay. we're constantly told that 50mg should last 24 hours, & given the half-lives, taking 25mg & drinking after an hour is much the same as taking 50mg & drinking after 4-8 hours

keep up the good work :)

Well done Cosmo

I was interested to read about this being the second time round, I've read somewhere that it can be easier the 2 nd time. I would be interested in your thoughts.

Anyway keep up the good work
