Lundbeck Pharmaceuticals in Denmark is brining an even more advanced drug called Nalfemene to market - hopefully in 2012.

They recently released results of a trial involving 1300 patients. http://www.lundbeck.com/investor/releases/ReleaseDetails/Release_1476586_EN.asp

A key part of the study is that no abstinence treatment goals were imposed.

“Nalmefene builds on a novel principle of treating alcohol dependence. Unlike existing therapies, the treatment with nalmefene is not aimed at keeping the patients from drinking. Instead, nalmefene helps to control and limiting the intake of alcohol. “

The report concludes saying: “Alcohol dependence remains a highly stigmatised, under-diagnosed and undertreated disease.”

Andy, you might enjoy this thread on nalmefene. It discusses Biotie and Lundbeck. The data from their clinical trial should be out soon. Those of you in Europe will see oral nalmefene long before it gets to the States.
