There are two new studies abstracted in Pubmed on naltrexone:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1996 ... inalpos=12

and
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1995 ... inalpos=17

Perhaps at some point LoOp might be able to read the originals and see if they are relevant to TSM? The first used data from the COMBINE study to look in more depth at the effects of NAL and Combined Behavioral Intervention (both separately and when used in combination) on trajectories of drinking. To me, it read as if the combination appeared to work best, but it's an abstract that I think should be interpreted with someone with a background in behavioral sciences (not me :)

The second was a study done on rats (always problematic to extrapolate to humans I know) on the effects of chronic naltrexone treatment on ethanol consumption. From my layman reading of the abstract, it contained a mix of news: while being administered, the NAL at high dosages reduced consumption, but when stopped there was a significant increase in consumption. I take that to mean you should always take your NAL.

To me, with no medical background whatsoever, these new studies seem to show that there are some benefits to taking NAL above and beyond the extinction effect, but I gather there is some debate on that on this board?

Happy New Year to all --
Sabrina

I emailed you the PDF's of the full articles.

Bob, what was that site that I could upload files to for sharing?

Thanks LoOp! I just skimmed the articles and I thought they both are fascinating. The first looks more closely at the COMBINE results and interprets them a bit differently than in the past. The interesting part to me with my quick skim (and not being a skilled graph reader) is that the authors completely accept the extinction effect of naltrexone and refer to it several times. Again with my first read I thought there was information there too that might be helpful to those for whom it's taking a bit longer to work. The second one (rats) is more technical, but again after a quick read seems to support the TSM rules of always taking NAL when you're going to drink and NOT taking it if you're not going to. Anyway, more grist for the mill....

http://www.rapidshare.com allows anonymous free upload and a total of 10 free anonymous downloads from others.

There is also megaupload.com
I'm not sure of it's limitations, but you can anonymously upload a file for sharing there too.

Bob

Good Lord, can someone put this in layman's terms? I get a headache trying to decipher. I think I'll have a drink and give it another look... :D
