Did he tell you to take naltrexone with continued drinking consistent with TSM?

Actually, he was only vaguely familiar with TSM when I first approached him about getting Naltrexone, but he was open-minded about TSM once I explained it to him (I've been seeing him for a few years, so he knows me). I gave him my copy of the book and he read it, and he was quite enthusiastic about the program. When I told him that many doctors would not prescribe Nal if the knew their patients intended to continue drinking per the program, he was incredulous. He couldn't understand why a doctor would deny someone a tool for beating addiction, unless their health was threatened by it (e.g., high liver numbers). Since then he told me he has taken on a few more TSM patients, so it's clear he believes in it.

That's excellent. The few doctors not living in the stone ages who do prescribe naltrexone almost always incorrectly prescribe it with abstinence. We need to keep a list of the real TSM doctors. If nothing else, when it comes out that every doctor in America is basically committing malpractice by prescribing naltrexone with instructions to abstain, these people should be revered for actually serving their patients' best interests.

Dr. Becker says that part of the problem is that only certain methods of treating addictions are taught in medical school. Others are ignored or glossed over. I think it would be highly beneficial to have TSM formally taught in medical school, especially for those students who intend to go into Psychiatry. I think that would also help focus attention on developing new and improved medications that will one day work even better than Naltrexone!

It's terrible that people like you and I have to go out and beat the bushes for an addiction cure that works. I hate to think where I might be if I hadn't persisted in finding a treatment that didn't involve "admitting that I was powerless." I just couldn't do it. I KNEW there was something that made more sense, but I didn't know what it was. Thank God I took a chance and bought the TSM book. It's time that care providers learned about this stuff and started bringing it to their patients, rather than the other way around.

Great resource. It's nice to have someone nearby to refer friends to. Turns out I know more people than I thought who would like to get control over their drinking. My wife's success has brought them out in the open. It seems I have found a new pastime coaching TSM people. No surprise doctors are a step behind. Many of them still do not have computers for many of their tasks. Of course, there IS a new breed out there and I am sure they will not be satisfied accepting the superstitious practices for substance abuse that permeates the field of medicine.
